Golden Hour Couples Photoshoot at Shark Fin Cove in Santa Cruz
couples photoshoot at shark fin cove in santa cruz! kayla and her partner were so genuinely fun to photograph — playful, easy with each other, and honestly just ready to have a good time. this was their first couples session ever, which made it even more special to be part of. they didn't need much direction at all. by the time we were running along the sand and spinning each other around, it felt less like a shoot and more like just hanging out at the beach with great light.
Shark Fin Cove is one of those spots that has real personality. the cove sits tucked below the coastal bluffs, and the iconic fin-shaped sea stack dominates the background in a way that makes almost every frame feel a little cinematic. the sand is soft and wide, the waves roll in with some drama, and the rock faces catch late-afternoon light like nothing else. when golden hour hits and the sun drops toward the water, that sandstone turns this deep amber — the whole cove almost seems to glow from within. that's the moment you're there for, and we timed it perfectly. if you're thinking about shooting here, my Shark Fin Cove Couples Session Guide – Santa Cruz breaks down how the light moves through the cove and what to expect.
their styling was spot on for the location — she wore a white floral maxi dress and a softer polka-dot sundress at different points in the session, and he stayed in neutral earth tones the whole time: a cream linen button-down, light-wash wide-leg jeans, clean white sneakers. nothing competed with the warmth of the light or the texture of the rock. it all just worked together naturally.
the moments that stood out most were the ones in between the prompts. her laughing with her whole face when he pulled her in from behind. the two of them running across the sand holding hands, her dress lifting with the movement, both of them completely mid-laugh. the forehead-to-forehead moment against the cliff face where she had her hand curved around his face and just couldn't stop smiling. for a first time in front of a camera together, they brought so much ease and so much of themselves.
the golden hour light hitting the back of the shark fin was genuinely one of those moments where you're looking through the viewfinder and you know the shot is already there. that amber backlight spilling across the sea stack, the couple walking hand-in-hand toward the surf — it's the kind of frame that reminds you why this location is worth the drive down the coast.
if you're looking for a Santa Cruz couple photoshoot location that actually delivers — dramatic scenery, beautiful golden hour, and a little bit of adventure — shark fin cove is hard to beat. you can browse more sessions like this in my couples photography portfolio, or take a look at couples session pricing if you're thinking about booking something for yourself.
