Golden Hour Couples Session at Shark Fin Cove
couples photoshoot at shark fin cove! this session with khuong and their partner was one of those evenings where the location just does everything right. we hit the beach right at golden hour, and that late-september light coming in low over the sandstone formations — warm, directional, almost amber — made every single frame feel like it belonged in a film.
shark fin cove is genuinely one of the most dramatic spots on the california coast for a couples photoshoot. the sea stacks rise right out of the surf, the waves break against the rocks with real energy, and the sand stretches wide enough to move around freely. it's not an easy-access beach, which honestly keeps it from feeling crowded, and once you're down there it feels like your own private stretch of the pacific.
these two brought such an easy, genuine energy to the whole session. there was never a moment where things felt stiff or over-posed — they were just completely comfortable with each other, and it showed. the carry shots, the forehead-to-forehead moments under her veil, the bouquet-in-the-air frame where she's mid-laugh and he's just watching her with the quietest smile — none of that was manufactured. they just kind of fell into it.
her look was beautifully considered: a sleeveless white gown with a lace bodice, a satin bow at the back, pearl drop earrings, and delicate hair pins that caught the light just right. his dark suit, striped tie, and blush rose boutonniere kept everything feeling sharp without competing with the setting. the contrast between her white and his charcoal reads especially well against all that warm sandstone.
the veil shots were a highlight — the coastal breeze was doing real work, billowing the fabric out into this soft arch around them, and the light filtering through it gave those frames such a luminous, quiet quality. it's one of those things that only works when there's actually wind, so we leaned into it.
if you're thinking about a romantic bay area photoshoot along the coast, shark fin cove is worth the drive down highway 1. the golden hour window here is short and it goes fast, so timing matters — but when you hit it right, the light on those rocks is genuinely unlike anything else. for more ideas on where to shoot up and down the bay area coastline, the Bay Area Couples Photography Location Guide is a good place to start.
so glad we got this one. what an evening.
