UC Berkeley Graduation Photos at Doe Library & Sather Gate

This UC Berkeley graduation session with Sonia was one of my favorites. We shot at Sather Gate, inside Doe Library, and in front of Doe Library—three of the most reliable photo spots on campus.

The session felt smooth from start to finish. Sonia brought great energy, and when her friends joined for group shots, they came up with poses on the spot, which made everything feel natural and candid.

Sather Gate was a strong starting point. It’s one of the most recognizable spots on campus and gives that classic UC Berkeley look right away.

Inside Doe Library was a highlight. It was my first time shooting there, and the lighting is naturally soft and even. It’s usually best in the morning, but even during golden hour, the indoor lighting held up well and gave clean, balanced results.

In front of Doe Library is where lighting really peaked. During golden hour, the sun hits at an angle that lets you stay in open shade while still getting soft, warm light. This avoids harsh shadows and keeps skin tones consistent.

UC Berkeley is one of the easiest campuses to shoot at because of how many good locations are close together and how well the environment works with natural light. When conditions are right, it’s hard to get bad photos here.

Tips for UC Berkeley Grad Photos • Start about 60–90 minutes before sunset • Prioritize Doe Library and Sather Gate • Stay in open shade for the best lighting • Bring friends for natural group shots
