Why Crissy Field Works for Family Photos

Crissy Field suits families who don't want to stand still. The open promenade, shoreline, and grassy field give us space for walking photographs, playful moments with kids, and frames that breathe.

It also reads as unmistakably San Francisco. Depending on conditions and where we stand, the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay, and the open water can sit in the background of your portraits.

Because there's so much open space, it's a comfortable choice for energetic kids — they have room to run between setups, which often loosens everyone up and leads to more natural expressions.

What the Photos Can Look Like

We can mix wide, airy environmental portraits against the water and sky with closer, warmer photos that focus on the family together.

Movement is part of the appeal here — walking along the shoreline, kids leading the way, parents swinging a toddler — alongside calmer posed portraits when we want something more classic.

  • Wide waterfront portraits with the bay and big sky
  • Photos with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background (conditions permitting)
  • Beach and shoreline photographs
  • Walking and movement photos along the promenade
  • Playful, candid moments with children
  • Classic posed family portraits on the grass

Best Time of Day

The light is often best in the softer hours around sunrise or in the last stretch before sunset, when the open exposure isn't as harsh and the water can pick up warmer tones.

Midday can be bright and contrasty in the open, so we plan placement and timing around that. The exact start time depends on the date, the season's sunset, fog, and the look you want, and we'll lock it in once the session is booked.

Best Seasons

Crissy Field changes a lot with the seasons and the day. Summer in San Francisco frequently brings afternoon fog and wind off the water, while fall often delivers some of the clearest, calmest evenings of the year — one reason it's a popular window for family photos.

Spring grass tends to be green and fresh, and winter can be crisp and quiet but cold by the water. These are general patterns, not promises — fog, wind, and visibility can shift quickly, so we stay flexible as the date approaches.

What to Wear at Crissy Field

Layers are your friend here. It's usually cooler and breezier by the water than inland, so bring a light jacket or sweater even on a sunny day, and plan for hair that moves in the wind rather than fighting it.

Soft, coordinated colors — neutrals, muted blues, warm earth tones — sit nicely against the sand, grass, and sky. Coordinate without matching, vary textures, and choose comfortable shoes you don't mind getting a little sandy.

For a head-to-toe approach, see the what-to-wear guide.

Family and Child Considerations

The main promenade is flat and largely paved, which makes it stroller-friendly, with sand and grass nearby when we want a softer surface.

Wind is part of the experience, so movement-based prompts work especially well with kids and help everyone stay warm and engaged. Bring layers, water, and snacks, and expect other park users, runners, and dogs sharing the space.

I can't guarantee a perfectly visible Golden Gate Bridge — fog and weather can roll in — but a soft, foggy backdrop often becomes part of the character of the session rather than a problem. Access, parking, and restroom availability may change, so please review current location information before the session.

Parking and Arrival

There are parking areas near Crissy Field, but they can fill up on clear weekends and pleasant evenings, so give yourself extra time to park and walk to the meeting point.

I'll send the exact meeting spot before your session. I don't guarantee specific parking prices or availability, so it's worth checking current conditions close to the date.
