Crissy Field changes a lot with the seasons and the day. Summer in San Francisco frequently brings afternoon fog and wind off the water, while fall often delivers some of the clearest, calmest evenings of the year — one reason it's a popular window for family photos.

Spring grass tends to be green and fresh, and winter can be crisp and quiet but cold by the water. These are general patterns, not promises — fog, wind, and visibility can shift quickly, so we stay flexible as the date approaches.

What to Wear at Crissy Field

Layers are your friend here. It's usually cooler and breezier by the water than inland, so bring a light jacket or sweater even on a sunny day, and plan for hair that moves in the wind rather than fighting it.

Soft, coordinated colors — neutrals, muted blues, warm earth tones — sit nicely against the sand, grass, and sky. Coordinate without matching, vary textures, and choose comfortable shoes you don't mind getting a little sandy.

The main promenade is flat and largely paved, which makes it stroller-friendly, with sand and grass nearby when we want a softer surface.

Wind is part of the experience, so movement-based prompts work especially well with kids and help everyone stay warm and engaged. Bring layers, water, and snacks, and expect other park users, runners, and dogs sharing the space.

I can't guarantee a perfectly visible Golden Gate Bridge — fog and weather can roll in — but a soft, foggy backdrop often becomes part of the character of the session rather than a problem. There are parking areas near Crissy Field, but they can fill up on clear weekends and pleasant evenings, so give yourself extra time to park and walk to the meeting point.
